Chengdu, China
The Australian women’s soccer team the Matildas has won the Asian Cup for the first time in history.
The Matildas beat North Korea 5-4 on penalties after being locked at one-all in normal play.
It took 30 minutes of resistance in shocking weather through extra time to force penalties.
“I am over the moon for the girls. This is a great team of young and experienced players and they did Australia proud today. We congratulate North Korea on their persistence, however in the end the Matildas were the fortunate winners. We can now look forward with confidence to the Women’s World Cup next year” said Melissa Barbieri, captain and goal keeper of Matildas.
It’s the first major trophy for any Australian soccer team. FIA Sports Management is proud to exclusively represent Melissa Barbieri.
